This coin depicts Khosrow II, Sasanian King of Kings 590 - 628. He was the son of Hormizd IV, and grandson of Khosrow I. In 590, Hormizd IV dismissed his military general, Bahram Chobin. Bahram, being a noble born military leader, had a substantial following of soldiers who allied with him and rebelled against Hormizd IV. Around this time, Hormizd's brothers were involved in a palace revolt. They put Khosrow II on the throne, and later killed Hormizd IV. Bahram continued his rebellion, and declared himself King of Kings in 590. Khosrow II sent messages to the Byzantine Emperor, Maurice (a rival empire to the Sasanians) asking for assistance in regaining his throne. The Byzantine Emperor agreed, in exchange for control over disputed territories between the Byzantines and Sasanians. Khosrow II eventually had Bahram Chobin assassinated in 591, restoring Khosrow II's rule over the Sasanian Empire. |
The Sasanian Empire was an ancient Iranian Empire from 224 - 651 AD. At its height, the empire controlled all of modern-day Iran and Iraq. The Muslim conquest of Persia ended the Sasanian Empire, resulting in Islamic control of the region. |
